Our holidays offer all families the perfect solution to keeping everyone happy and having fun (yes, even teenagers!).
Here's what makes our family holidays so wonderful for every family (and particularly those travelling alone with children):
Our Maltese Family Adventure Holiday is our most recent addition (new this summer) and is already proving really popular for 2020. This beautiful island captures the hearts of many with its stunning coastline, bays and vibrant entertainment district.
Featuring one of our best activity programmes, Malta offers coasteering, zip-lining across the sea, abseiling, snorkelling, climbing, kayaking and a full day at the local water park. Evenings can be spent enjoying the swimming pool, or wandering into St George's Bay entertainment district. Your free day can be spent on the local beach or exploring the rest of the island.
Staying in an exclusive Acorn Guest House, in your own private en-suite family room, the Guest House is shared with other like-minded Acorn families, making this a really sociable holiday for you and the kids. Close to all the action, you can walk to the beach and entertainment area in the evenings and enjoy everything this wonderful island has to offer.
This is a holiday that offers it all. Fun activities in the great outdoors, evenings enjoying the local entertainment, relaxation by the pool or on the beach and lots of opportunities to make friends.
Malta is a short flight away from the UK, with many budget airlines travelling to this destination. The airport is only 20 minutes away from the Guest House, making travelling here really easy.
The perfect family holiday.
Acorn Adventure – family holidays. 17 years ago my life changed forever when I started working for Acorn in France. Fast forward 17 years later and I’m back with my own daughter (an acorn baby) to holiday as a family. My dreams literally came true.
Acorn Adventure very kindly invited me to holiday with them in exchange for an honest review (also probably because I’m the best member of staff they’ve ever had – I think it’s a bit like my employee of the decade award too)!
If you don’t know anything about Acorn Adventure, they’ve been around for a long time, over 35 years actually, so they are very experienced. Acorn offer outdoor adventure trips for schools, groups and families in 9 different activity centres across the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Malta. You can find out more about Acorn Adventure family holidays here.
We visited their site in the beautiful Brecon Beacons; set in the shores of the largest natural lake in Wales and nestled in a beautiful National Park.
I thought I’d put my review in separate sections so each area is easy to come back to. Brace yourself, grab a cup of tea and here we go…
Prior to becoming a parent, travel and adventure were part and parcel of who I was. I’d taken a GAP year before university to India, where armed with a backpack and an ill fitting mosquito net, I trawled the subcontinent before settling in Kolkata [Calcutta] where I volunteered with Mother Teresa’s sisters in their orphanage, street dispensary, and home for the dying. I continued this wanderlust to the Philippines, Naples and the Bronx, before settling to my studies. I should point out that I’ve always been an incredibly nervous flyer, but the desire to see the world gave me courage to overcome that fear. I always imagined [rather idealistically] that should I ever have children, I would be putting my toddler in a backpack and revisiting places on my travels.
However, on becoming a mother [a single one], at the age of 32, I realised that I had suddenly become rather more cautious. Gone were my days of collecting intestinal parasites as a matter of pride, or taking risks and sleeping in cheap backpacker hostels. As much as I wanted to show my son the world and nurture him with a sense of adventure, I had neither the finances or courage to whisk him off to the subcontinent and beyond.
I’ve recently trained as a secondary school teacher, and as part of our training, we were sent on a day’s outdoor adventure. I always dreaded PE at school, not because I didn’t like exercise but because I didn’t like the regimental routines of getting changed and having no choice about what we did. I was also very conscious that I wasn’t perhaps as fit as the other girls, and wouldn’t be chosen first. Consequently I dreaded our day of outdoor adventure, and didn’t sleep much the night before. There was talk of climbing telegraph poles and high ropes. It all sounded awful. It’s incredible how school memories of exercise can impact upon us in adulthood. (No one mention the Bleep Test please!) On a serious note, our own apprehensions can be passed onto our children, and I’m conscious that there is much fun to be had the other side of my fears.

There is much discussion and debate about why holidays cost so much in the school holidays. It is a big source of frustration for many parents, especially for families who can't afford the peak prices and then have to consider whether to break the rules and take their children out of school in term time.
At Acorn, we understand this and have created family activity holidays that are affordable in the summer holidays. Our 3 night UK breaks start from as little as £188pp during the months of July and August.
A holiday in the Brecon Beacons during the summer holidays costs just £248 per child and £288 per adult for a 4 night mid week activity break in August 2019. This includes full board accommodation, a full activity programme, evening entertainment and soft drinks with meals.
